A massive mushroom cannot grow past the height restriction. Any little mushroom planted will not automatically develop into a large mushroom; a bone meal must be used.

As a result, if a block is 7 meters above, the massive mushroom will always grow to reach 5 blocks tall.

Nylium is an excellent choice for producing large mushrooms in the underworld. It’s worth noting that spreading nylium to nearby netherrack blocks is possible by utilizing bone meal on the netherrack.

How to place a mushroom in Minecraft

When a mushroom obtains a random tick, it has a 4% chance of trying to spread. When this happens, the game selects a block near the mushroom, and if a mushroom can be planted there, a new mushroom emerges; otherwise, the effort fails.

The technique used to choose the new place for the attempt is a multi-step procedure that is somewhat dependent on which adjacent blocks are eligible areas for planting a mushroom.

Mushrooms have the potential to spread up to five blocks distant (including diagonally along all three axes), but only if the blocks in between are also eligible mushroom sites.

Spreading this far has a very low likelihood – the majority of spreads will be within two blocks of the originating mushroom, with the most common places being within one block. The method is weighted in such a way that spread to neighboring y-levels is favored. This minimizes the likelihood of a mushroom spreading widely in the y-direction.

Furthermore, mushrooms will only attempt to spread if there are less than 5 mushrooms of the same type in a 9x9x3 space around the initial mushroom.

The biggest risk with little mushroom farming is that they must be kept in dimly lit interior spaces, which increases the likelihood of hostile mobs spawning in the same location (except on Peaceful mode). This can be addressed in a variety of ways.

The simplest method is to install a large number of soul torches, which emit light level 10, which is dark enough for mushrooms but illuminated enough to keep enemies away.

Another option is to install ordinary torches two blocks above the location where you want your mushrooms to grow (sometimes in tiny holes cut into the ceiling overhead). Another method is to make the farming space only one block high, pave any pathways with slabs, and use a water system to route the mushrooms out of the farm room and into the garden.
